NEO Press Releases

Applications are now open for the NEO Summer Art Academy, sponsored by the NEO Development Foundation.  The art classes will take place in the studios and classrooms of Kah-Ne Hall July 14-17.  A morning session will be offered for middle school students who have completed grades 6-8 and an afternoon session will be for students who have completed grades 9-12; home-schooled students of corresponding grade levels are encouraged to register.

Teaching artist Jordan Murdock has been hired to instruct the students in several projects that will develop their painting skills and enhance their knowledge of art history.  Murdock is a BFA graduate of Missouri Southern State University with an emphasis in painting.  She has taught art privately for six years and has worked with organizations such as Lifehouse Community Center, Art Feeds, and Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin, Missouri, and has led several community-based mural projects in the Midwest region  She is enthusiastic about sharing the joy of creating with artists of all ages and at all skill levels.

The NEO Summer Art Academy classes are limited in size and will be filled as applications are received.  Tuition is $50, with some scholarships available.  Registration and scholarship applications can be requested at jennifer.hessee@neo.edu or at the NEO Foundation Office on the second floor of the Library Administration Building.

For younger artists, the Miami Arts and Humanities Council will host its 18th annual “Art for Fun.” This art camp is for kids who have finished grades 3-5, and sign-ups will begin on June 30 at the CVB office at the corner of the Coleman Theatre in downtown Miami.  Art for Fun will be in the mornings of July 14-18.  Chairman Tammy Willcox can be contacted at (918) 541-0477 and at harpcrazy@hotmail.com.
