Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) held a commencement ceremony for students in the High School Equivalency (HSE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. Held on Thursday, June 28, in Commons Hall, family and friends joined staff from the NEO Adult Learning Center to honor the students. In all, five students received their ESL certificates and five students earned GEDs. Graduate Merissa Perry delivered the address at the ceremony. “I wanted to set an example for my kids,” said Perry. “It’s never too late to pursue your dreams. If you get an opportunity, take it. No matter how nervous you are, because it is worth it.”

Each year, the NEO Adult Learning Center offers free HSE prep classes each semester, serving over a dozen students each year. Classes are offered throughout the surrounding area to help students create a new path. This year, Mrs. Hortensia Holman not only earned both an ESL and GED certificate, she also completed her CNA program at Northeast Tech. “What might seem like a small ceremony to some, the Class of 2018 NEO Adult Learning Center Graduation was a huge celebration for those who have worked very hard to accomplish the credentials and certifications they received,” said Cheryle Martin, director of the Adult Learning Center. “It is an event for them to share with family and friends and to recapture a moment many of them think has already passed them by. Even if we only had one person to walk across that stage, we still would have pulled out all the stops for them. It’s just that important!”
