The Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) Equestrian team travelled to West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas to compete in the IHSA Western Semi-Finals on March 24-26. During the event, NEO qualified three more riders for the International Horse Show Association (IHSA) Nationals in Lexington, Ky. on May 4-7. Along with Sophomore Brittany Abernathy, who earned her spot at nationals with her top regional finish, Krista Rodney, Edson Varela, and Katie Daniels also qualified to compete in Lexington.
During the weekend show, athletes competed in both team and individuals competitions. For the team event, the five-person group of Brittany Abernathy, Alex Spratt, Karli Jones, Myranda Alford, and Sam Clayton earned a sixth-place overall finish after two days of competition. NEO also fielded six individual riders for the solo portion of the show: Brittany Abernathy, Krista Rodney, Edson Varela, Alex Spratt, Becca Garrett, and Katie Daniels. “I am so proud of how all nine riders represented NEO and our region at the 2017 IHSA Semi Finals,” said Amanda Burrows, NEO Equestrian coach. “Our goal was to leave it all out in the arena and ride every step. We have four extremely talented students that made it to the next level and are headed to Nationals.” For more information on the NEO Equestrian Program, contact Amanda Burrows at Amanda.burrows@neo.edu.
