The Art Program at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) and the NEO Development Foundation will host the fifth annual Summer Art Academy,“Canvas on Campus,” on Tuesday, July 18 and Wednesday, July 19 from 9 AM to 3 PM in Kah-Ne Hall. Students’ art will be on display in the Charles Banks Wilson Gallery in Kah-Ne Hall from 3-3:30 PM on Wednesday, and friends, family, and members of the community are encouraged to stop in for the show. The Art Academy is open to students entering grades 7-12, as well as those who have just graduated from high school. Cost of attendance is $15 and includes lunch and a snack both days. The registration deadline is Wednesday, July 7, and registration forms can be requested by e-mailing sandy.shults@neo.edu.

This year, attendees will be painting with acrylics on canvas under the direction of NEO Art Instructor Jessica Stout. Projects will involve concepts of monochromatic and complementary color schemes, opacity and translucency, and variations in color value and intensity. Students will be introduced to relevant artists and paintings from art history. They will use both reference images and live sketching for inspiration in their own projects, and will also enjoy creating from the imagination. “I love the energy and enthusiasm of students at this age, and look forward to introducing them to some new skills and ideas about expression and creativity,” said Stout. “I want to help them appreciate the joy that the arts and culture can bring to our lives, especially if we are open to learning and thinking in fresh ways.”

Stout is a well-known and active artist in the community and has served as the Art Instructor at NEO for the past six years. In 2014, she was nominated for the Excellence in Education Award by the Miami Area Chamber of Commerce. She has long been an active member of the Miami Arts and Humanities Council, and in recent years has painted several murals in Miami. “The NEO Foundation is proud to partner with Jessica Stout and offer this exciting opportunity for young artists to explore their artistic interests,” said Jennifer Walker, executive director of the NEO Development Foundation. “Space is limited, so we encourage parents to get their child’s registration form in early.” For more information please contact the NEO Foundation Office at 918-540-6250.
