The pageant is the main aspect of the royalty competition. (Other events include a dinner, interviews and the creation of Linked-In profiles.) This year, candidates were judged on the content of their Linked-In profiles, interview performance and they will be scored on their pageant presentation. Jennifer Penate, local news anchor from KODE, will serve as emcee. The candidates will wear formal attire and answer two sets of questions. Miami Little Theatre will provide entertainment in between the two sets of questions. NEO will conduct live audience polling for Mr./Ms. Congeniality (those awards are presented at the pageant) and the emcee will introduce the judges. After the pageant, there will be free ice cream for everyone.
The competition also serves to raise spirit on campus. It is not a beauty contest, but general poise/presentation is scored. The candidates’ responses to their questions are worth the most points. Also, Mr./Ms. Congeniality are awarded a couple of bonus points. After the pageant, judges’ score sheets are combined for each candidate and tallied to determine king, queen, first runners-up and second runners-up (both female and male). The winners are announced during NEO’s half-time of the homecoming game during the coronation ceremony. The homecoming king/queen receive $250 scholarships and the runners-up receive bookstore gift certificates. The king/queen attend various events throughout the year and represent NEO in the local community. The pageant will be Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the NEO Fine Arts Building. The public is invited to attend the NEO Homecoming Pageant and admission is free. A complete list of all Homecoming activities can be found at https://neo.edu/StudentLife/Activities/Homecoming.
