Officials at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) are announcing the Marcus Allen Bunce Memorial Nursing Scholarship to honor Marcus Bunce, a former Norseman nursing student who passed away after injuries sustained from a car/pedestrian accident in Dec. 2015. On Wed. April 20, 2016 at 2 p.m. in Commons Hall, NEO will host a reception to endow the scholarship. Shortly after Bunce’s passing, friends and family established a Gofundme.com campaign to raise money for funeral expenses and to establish a scholarship in his memory. Originally set for $10,000, the campaign raised over $16,000 in 2 months.

Bunce was born in Miami, Okla. and studied at NEO before completing his Bachelor of Nursing degree at Oklahoma University. He and his fiancé, Paige Mishler, both worked as nurses at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Mo. Bunce was extremely passionate about their profession. “Nursing was his passion and he lived to save others,” reads the Gofundme.com donation page.

“From the overwhelming support from Marcus’s family, friends, and coworkers, it is obvious he touched many lives,” said Jennifer Hessee, executive director of the NEO Development Foundation. “This scholarship endowed in his memory will provide funding for generations of nursing students and help them enter a profession he dearly loved.”

The endowment will provide a $1,000 scholarship per academic year to a four-state area, second-year nursing student who has a 2.5 GPA and exhibits a true passion for nursing. The first recipient of the scholarship will be announced at the reception. For more information or to make a contribution to the scholarship fund, contact Jennifer Hessee at Jennifer.hessee@neo.edu.
