Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College student James Trammel attended the prestigious George and Donna Nigh Leadership Academy in Oklahoma City and was awarded the Leadership Scholarship.

The scholarship was established in 1999 to provide Oklahoma higher education institutions the ability to select a student each year to attend the leadership academy and be honored as a Nigh Scholar.

The student must exhibit strong leadership qualities, have high academic achievement, strong community involvement, and have graduated from an Oklahoma high school. Students receive a $1,000 Leadership Scholarship and attend the Nigh Leadership Academy.

The academy delivers development sessions on expanding personal skills and understanding leadership. It provides opportunities to outstanding students pursuing careers in public service.

Trammel joined other outstanding students from colleges and universities throughout Oklahoma.

“Being a part of the George and Donna Nigh Leadership Academy was a blessing in disguise,” said Trammel. “Not knowing what it might bring, I was nervous until I realized everyone around me had the same goals I did.”

Trammel said he learned you don’t have to come from a big city or be well-known to make a difference, “You can do it from here.”

Trammel encourages nominees to apply to the academy. In addition to earning a scholarship and traveling to exciting places, students can network with influential people and make new friends.
