SCHOOL OF LIBERAL ARTS

Department of Social Sciences

The NEO Department of Social Sciences provides students with an introduction into career fields in psychology, social sciences, social work, early childhood education, elementary education and criminal justice. Experienced faculty help students build a strong foundation for their future at a four-year university.

Criminal Justice

Students in the criminal justice program develop the foundational skills to enter a career in law enforcement. With practical, hands-on education in small class sizes, our program ensures that graduates will be confident in their skills to uphold the law. Graduates are prepared to pursue a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in criminal justice or seek direct employment.

Early Childhood Education

Focusing on the health and development of children can be satisfying and noble work. NEO offers an associate program and a one-year certification as the perfect introduction to child care education. Our program will teach you how to navigate curriculum management and development-appropriate activity. As one of the few two-year colleges in Oklahoma with a child development lab, our classes include lab experiences and a Scholars Program for daycare workers needing additional hours in the field.

Pre-Elementary Education

A degree in elementary education prepares graduates for certification to teach grades 1 through 6. Students can also focus on certification in special education. These rewarding career paths are an invaluable part of our society.

NEO’s Pre-Elementary Education program offers broad education in subject areas, preparing students to begin student-teaching when they transfer to a four-year program. Advisors will help students develop a plan of study that best fits the student’s transfer plans. Students are encouraged to seek degree program advice from the four-year college or university for which they plan to attend prior to transfer.

Psychology and Sociology

Learn the theories and practical knowledge needed for a career in psychology or sociology. Learn to think critically and interact with people. NEO psychology and sociology students benefit from experienced instructors, all of whom have been or currently are practicing in their fields. Students can prepare for careers as psychologists, therapists, counselors, or social workers. They will establish a foundation in theory and critical thinking needed for transfer to a four-year program.
