The Great Balancing Act

Do you ever find yourself struggling to find balance in your life? Between keeping up with your classes and work schedule while trying to maintain relationships with family and friends, you can easily feel overwhelmed. Often it seems there is not enough time in the day to complete what you initially set out to accomplish. The tools below will help you manage your time efficiently by prioritizing tasks and reducing distractions.

  • First, think about what you need to accomplish during the week. Do you have any assignments due? Do you need to study for an upcoming exam? Consider your responsibilities outside of classwork. What are your work hours? Do you have any bills that are due? If you have children, what are their weekly activities? It often helps to make a to-do list. Click here for tips on creating to-do lists.
  • Use a Weekly Calendar (PDF) to keep track of assignments, exams, and other tasks you must complete. It is also a good idea to schedule study time throughout your week. If you schedule time to study, stick with your commitment!
  • Explore different types of planners and calendars that are ideal for student use. Getting Organized for College Success is a step-by-step guide to choosing an organizational system that is right for you
  • Reference the 2018-2019 Academic Calendar (PDF) to check important deadlines. Use our Semester Calendar to write in important dates that are outlined on your course syllabi. While you are planning and scheduling your days and weeks throughout the semester, it’s important to remember self-care. Make time for yourself to relax or reward yourself when you have completed all of the tasks on your to-do list.
